About this Concert
Porto Pianofest is proud to present the award winning pianist, Alexander Kobrin, for the first time in Portugal. This will be the opening event to our festival's 6th edition— a week of concerts, masterclasses and artist residencies.
Alexander Kobrin is the 2005 Gold Medal winner of The Cliburn Competition, as well as the winner of the Busoni, Hamamatsu and Scottish International Competition. He will be performing works by Beethoven and Chopin, some of his personal references, as well as the monumental Pictures at an Exhibition by Mussorgsky.

José Ramón Méndez’ recitals at Porto Pianofest have been, since its first year, one of the festival’s highlights. In keeping with tradition, Dr. Méndez performs a solo concert for the sixth time in six PPF editions, for the delight our audience. Each year, this exceptional pianist performs both lyrical and virtuoso performances, playing mostly music from the golden age of the piano. José Ramón Méndez will offer a fantastic program, performing works by Schumann, Liszt, Granados and Ravel. An event not to be missed!

About this Concert
A joining of two energies— music and technology.
Pianist-composer Mariel Mayz, and Javascript engineer and generative artist Taylor Baldwin, come together for a multimedia performance to engage the senses. Mariel Mayz, the curator of Porto Pianofest’s New Music Series, will be performing original piano works as well as works by Fazil Say, Clarice Assad, and John Adams. Concurrently, Taylor Baldwin (Uber, New York Times, BuzzFeed) has developed a new software for this collaborative performance, which will project computer-generated artwork based on the sound frequency produced by the piano, all in the starry, open-air space of the Universidade do Porto’s Reitoria courtyard. Overall, this event will combine image and sound in a world-premiere partnership.

Stephanie Ding Draughon has been establishing herself as one of the leading, young interpreters of Chopin. She was the winner of the 2018 Chopin Foundation Scholarship, the Chopin Prize Recipient at the Claudette Sorel Competition, and was a participant in the 2021 International Chopin Competition in Warsaw, to name a few.

Aliya Turetayeva was born in Almaty, Kazakhstan and has appeared on several occasions as a soloist with the Chamber Orchestra and State Symphony Orchestra at the State Philharmonic Hall and at the Kazakh Concert Hall in Almaty. Aliya was a prizewinner at the Feurich International Competition in Vienna, at the Concert Artists International in New York (2nd Prize and Outstanding Performance Award), 3rd prizewinner at the Verao Classico Festival in Lisbon, Portugal and finalist at the Osaka International Music Competition in Japan. She was also awarded Diploma at the V. Krainev International Piano Competition for Young Pianists, the Brueser Berger Musikpreis in Bonn, Germany, 3rd Prize at Labia & Callegaro Prize in Italy and an Honorable Mention Award at Bradshaw & Buono International Piano Competition in New York, USA; among many other accolades.

Forrest Howell, is a current Doctoral Candidate at the University of Michigan. He has performed extensively around the US, in states such as Utah, Maine, and Michigan. He has additionally performed in the UK and Spain at a variety of festivals, and for a range of conferences, such as the MTNA conference in the US.

About this Concert
For Porto Pianofest’s 6th edition, we introduce the Artist Residency Series, aimed at young pianists who come to Porto to prepare for future projects— recitals, competitions, recordings— to work with artist faculty and present their music to PPF’s audience.

American-born pianist Alexander Thomas has performed throughout Italy, Spain, Canada and the Eastern United states, appearing in Symphony Hall (Boston), Steinway Hall (New York), the National Opera Center (New York), and the Koger Center for the Arts (Columbia). During his study at the University of South Carolina he was granted the Mary Curtis Hawes Award for outstanding improvement and quality contribution to the school of music and shortly thereafter joined USC’s Community Music School. In recognition of his teaching, he has been appointed positions at New York University and Boston University where he founded “BU InterStudio,” an initiative that organized educational and performance opportunities for students as an integrated part of the larger Boston community. Having joined the Westfield State University music faculty in 2019 as Visiting Lecturer in Piano, Mr. Thomas teaches and oversees the Applied, Studio, and Class Piano programs.

Taiwanese-American pianist and violinist, Fantee Jones of Roseville, California gave her first solo recital at the age of seven and made her concerto debut performing Mozart’s Piano Concerto in A Major, K. 488 at age ten. She has continued her noteworthy accomplishments winning many awards in various international competitions. Recently, she was a semi-finalist at the 2020 National Chopin Piano Competition, winner of the 2019 Eastman School Concerto Competition, finalist at the 2018 Serge and Olga Koussevitzky Young Artist Awards, prizewinner at the 2018 Los Angeles International Piano Competition, and a winner of the PianoTexas International Young Artists Concerto Competition, among others. As a result, she performed the Prokofiev 3rd Piano Concerto with the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra, under the baton of Lio Kuokman.

About this Concert
International, virtuoso pianist and Porto Pianofest director Nuno Marques performs a solo recital at the exquisite Arab Room of the Palácio da Bolsa. In this one-of-a-kind setting, Nuno Marques will present a program of two monumental works of the piano canon— Bach’s Partita No.6 and the Liszt Sonata. Both works are known for their remarkable melodies, technical trials, and extraordinary display of the human experience. This concert will be a brilliant conclusion to the 2021 season of the festival.

Due to limited venue capacity, this event will be presented as a gala fundraiser. All concert proceeds will go towards the Porto Pianofest organization and continuation of the festival mission in Portugal and abroad.
