The Pangea Trio arose from a shared desire to introduce audiences to 20th and 21st century music, most especially championing the chamber works of essential Portuguese composers. The distinctive flavor of the group’s output stems from its members’ choice to express their musical backgrounds through a repertoire that includes many performance premieres of new works, while simultaneously creating original interpretations of Classical and Romantic trio repertoire. The group includes pianist Bruno Belthoise, violinist Léo Belthoise, and cellist Sara Chordà.
Porto Pianofest is pleased to present this trio in a concert entitled “Homenagem Iberica to Gabriel Fauré”, dedicated to the centenary of the death of the French musical icon. The program is a journey in the footsteps of Fauré's music in Iberian lands. Exploring new paths of musical storytelling, the poetic works of Luiz Costa and Joaquim Turina respond to the universe of Fauré and anticipate a new musical era in the countries of Luiz de Camões and Cervantes. Each composer presented in this program offers great expressive depth. As for the young composer from Porto, Miguel Amaral, it is with a very personal, and colorful light rooted in the culture of his country that he pays homage to Gabriel Fauré with the new piece “Elegia a Gabriel Fauré” for violin and piano, commissioned by Trio Pangea— a piece that echoes "Élégie pour violoncelle et piano op.24" by the French Master.
